Abstract:
The geographical location, climatic conditions, cultivation and vegetation, and history of desert formation in Thar are described in detail. Suggests three methods for protecting Thar from becoming a mass of shifting sand: (1) Control over (a) grazing, (b) exploitation of trees and bushes and (c) agricultural practices: (2) Creation of shelter belts and cordoning sand hills; and (3) Fixation of shifting sands by vegetal cover. The techniques of raising shelter belts in the sand hills are also described. A list of plants found in Thar desert and also the meteorological data pertaining to Chhor are given.
