Abstract

Graphitic metapelites of Gandghar Range extend along a narrow strip for about 3 km. This is structurally bounded by Bagdara fault which frequently marks the upper contact of Manki Formation with Shekhai Formation in SW Hazara. Geological, geophysical and geochemical investigations conducted on the prospect revealed fair concentration of U, V, Ba and Pb. Siliceous nature of graphitic metapelites with anomalous graphitic carbon (14.20%) indicated an euxenic environment with transitional oxygenated conditions close to continent. Deep drilling and analytical data of core samples favour a supergene enrichment mechanism. Fracturing tectonics facilitated persistent mobilization of mobile elements and labile uranium in a regime dominated by oxidizing ground water of surface/ meteoric origin. Three consecutive zones have been defined from surface to depth. In the light of exploration data collected hitherto, it is concluded that graphitic metapelites of NW Himalayas in Pakistan have all the characteristics of low-grade large reserve potential for uranium.
