Abstract:
Trenbolone acetate as its alcoholic solution was incorporated in the trout feed pellets and its effect on growth, conversion and tissue chemistry was examined. The steroid was given for a period of 60 days at the doses of 10,2.5,5.0 and at a rate of 5% of their body weight daily. After 60 days the drug was withdrawn and the fish were placed on the normal diet for another 30 days. There was no effect on the weight, length and on the food conversion. No change in cranio-somatic and reno-somatic index was observed. Hepatosomatic index reduced (1.0,5.0 and 10.0 ppm groups) and viscero-somatic index increased in 10 and 2.5 ppm groups. After 60 days of drug feeding different changes in the proteins, RNA/DNA, protein/RNA and protein/DNA were observed in liver, kidney, brain and muscle. A significant decrease in the total muscle lipids was observed in all the experimental groups. According to the results of the present study, trenbolone acetate has no potential as a growth promotant in carp culture, but studies with other fish species and different modes of administration may give positive results.
