Abstract:
Study was conducted during 1960-1963 to investigate lint density of four local varieties SNR, M4, M100. and 289F1 (a variety of G. hirsutum) and the correlation between G.O.T. and hair density for M100 and S.N.R. cotton varieties was determined. The following findings are reported:- (1) The number of fibres per seed were 8,000 to 10,000 in the hirsutum group. The variety M100 possessed the highest number of fibers per seed on the average of three consecutive years. (2) 289F1 had the largest seed surface area whereas SNR (Arboreum type) had the smallest seed surface are. (3), The highest mean density of hairs per unit area has been found to be of the order of 97,93,89 and 86 in SNR M100, M4 and 289F1 respectively. (4) Average correlation coefficients between ginning out-turn and number of fibres per unit area of seed surface were + 0.2409 for M100 and + 0.3194 for SNR.
