Abstract:
Worldwide, the biggest food security threat is the reduction of growth, quality and yield of agricultural crops due to an increase in the elevation of environmental stresses. In this circumstance, there is dire need of introducing promising and economical techniques to control environmental stresses and ultimately enhance crops yield. Herein green nanobiotechnology is an effective technology, deals with the formulation of nanoparticles (NPs) that serve as building blocks as a stress elevators. Biogenic formulation of nanomaterials is an important and environment friendly step in the development of Nano-technological applications. Metal based nanomaterials are significant because of their physical, chemical, and biological features along with their vast applications. In addition to microbes based synthesis, the plant based synthesized nanomaterials is considered to be a more convenient, economic, and environmentally biocompatible approach for the mitigation of crop stresses and enhance their yield. The current climate change has altered several natural systems as a result of frequent droughts, infrequent precipitation, elevated temperature, and soil salinity. As a result of these environmental changes crop production has reduced globally. Over the past ten years, a thorough explanation of the role of biogenic nanomaterials in improving methylglyoxal detoxification, antioxidant defense mechanisms, conferring tolerance, and scavenging of stresses-induced ROS in plants has been explained. Even though, some research has been focused on metal based nanoparticles and stress tolerance. Therefore, in order to increase crop tolerance by using nanoparticles, it is necessary to understand the related information and have a solid understanding of how plants respond under stressful conditions. The current review illustrates the mechanistic approach that biogenic nanomaterials in plants alleviate the stresses by activating their defense system. Furthermore, we reviewed the key initiatives involving the exogenous application of nanomaterials to increase plant resistance to salt, low and high temperature, and drought stress as well as various threatening diseases of crops.
