Abstract:
Celestite ore is treated with 10% HCI to remove calcium carbonate & calcium sulfate. The residue, which is strontium sulfate, is treated with soda ash solution to produce strontium carbonate which is converted to strontium nitrate with nitric acid. Strontium nitrate is used for producing red colour in pyrotechnics railroad fuses and in tracer-bullet compositions.
