Abstract:
A graphite tube electric furnace was designed with no thermal insulation other than an annular space round the furnace. Fast rates of heating cooling are possible and thermal equilibrium can be achieved rapidly(in 3 min) at any desired sample temperature up to 3000°C. To obtain the variable input to the furnace, conventional type of rheostat was used. At high temperature, the performance of the rheostat was disappointing. A water-cooled variable resistor was designed which worked quite satisfactorily.
