Abstract:
Incidence of poliomyelitis is described as quite frequent in Pakistani villages. Subclinical infection result in immunity which could be confirmed by the presence of circulating antibodies. Blood sera from 140 persons aged 9 months to 20 years were examined for presence of antibodies to three types of poliomyelitis. Quantitative neutralization test using C.P.E. inhibition method metabolic inhibition test and compliment fixation tests carried out are described. Neutralization test in tissue culture was found to be quite reliable. Sub-clinical infection begins to take place in the first year of life, 50% of children at 2:3 months age get exposed to poliovirus. Deficiency of antibodies have been noted upto the age of 50 years especially among the children coming from higher in-come group families. Excretion of poliovirus and enterbviruses in the population has been described.
