Abstract:
Nanoscale particles represent a new generation of environmental remediation technologies that can provide cost-effective and rapid solution to meet some of the most challenging environmental cleanup problems. Nanostructred materials have an increasingly important role in the remediation of wastes. These particles have large surface areas, high surface reactivity and provide enormous flexibility for in situ and ex situ applications in transformation, decontamination and detoxification of heavy and toxic metals, radionuclides and organic pollutants from industrial effluents, wastewaters and ground water pollutants. Nanotechnology has the potential for sustainability of environmental quality through pollution prevention, treatment and remediation. Such benefits include fast and low level sensing, improved detection and the removal of finest contaminants from air, water and soil. It is the development of new “green” technologies that minimize generation of undesirable by-products and remediation of existing waste sites and polluted water sources.
