Abstract:
Chaj Doab (interfluve) lies at the northern peripheral zone of Punjab alluvial basin. Due to its close proximity to sub-Himalaya, nearly one-third area is comprised of piedmont zone. This interfluve is drained by two trunk streams i.e. River Jhelum and River Chenab and ephemeral streams emanating from sub-Himalayas. During high flow regime, fine sediments are transported in suspension. After natural sieving the fines are deposited in piedmont basin (Dinga basin) and back slope areas of fluvial channels. Dinga and Kalara clays are dominantly lean clays (CL) underlain by silty-clay (CL-ML), silt (ML) and silty sand (SM). Fat clay (CH) has also been encountered occasionally at depth in Mong-Shahpur plain, Young piedmont zone and Dinga basins. Activity and shrinkage limits of these soils have been determined. The activity of selected soil samples varied from 0.276 to 2.22 whereas shrinkage limit varied from 4.0% to 12.86%. Low to medium with occasional high expansion potential has been observed for these soils. Necessary recommendations have been made for the foundation of low rise buildings and construction of road embankment in Dinga clays (Dinga basin) and Kalara clays (Mong- Shahpur back slope basin).
