Abstract:
Vegetational changes were studied in a forest fire-hit area by comparing them with unburnt (control) plots in dry scrub type vegetation in Margalla hills. A comparison of the occurrence of species at both the sites indicated that there was more diversity of species in the fire-hit area. The floristic composition of post-burn vegetation is attributed due to increased exposure of the ground by burning off of the vegetation. In the ground cover, the percentage of herbs especially Malvastrum coromandelianum increased by 70%. Regeneration was also manifested in a few deep rooted species e.g. Carissa opaca. Unburnt plots were characterized by canopy differentiation while burnt plots were devoid of any stratification.
