Abstract:
In this study, Abelmoschus esculentus stem is used for adsorptive removal of two anionic dyes, namely; Alizarin Red-S and Brilliant Blue FCF, from water on batch scale. Optimized operational conditions for Alizarin Red-S dye adsorption were: 3.0 g adsorbent dose, 100 microns meshed particle size of adsorbent, 50 rpm agitation speed, 3.0 dye solution pH, 50 minutes contact time and 30° C temperature. Whereas for Brilliant Blue FCF, theses conditions were: 3.0 g adsorbent dose, 100 microns meshed particle size of adsorbent, 50 rpm agitation speed, 5.0 dye solution pH, 60 minutes contact time and 50° C temperature. Then using these optimized conditions, maximum adsorption capacity values of Abelmoschus esculentus stem for removing anionic dyes were determined, i.e. 100.43 and 75.06 mg.g-1 for Brilliant Blue FCF and Alizarin Red-S dyes respectively. The feasibility of this process is depicted from negative values of thermodynamic parameter ‘?Go’ values, which is -7.373 and -6.624 kJ.mol-1 for Brilliant Blue FCF and Alizarin Red- S dyes correspondingly. The results showed that the Abelmoschus esculentus stem powder can be used on larger scale water treatment plants for removing Alizarin Red-S and Brilliant Blue dyes from wastewater streams by applying optimized conditions.
