Abstract:
Osmotic fragility of RBCs in NaCl solutions was studies in rabbit, rat, chick and uromastix. The results showed that fragility curve could be distinguished into four distinct components a, b, c and d. Components b and d represented the minimum and maximum resistance of RBC to hypotonic NaCl solutions respectively. The RBCs of Uromastix hardwickii were found to be least resistant to hypotonic solutions while other animals could be arranged in the following order in terms of maximum resistance to osmotic hemolysis: Rat, Chick, and Rabbit. It is suggested that uromastix RBCs have become more sensitive to hypotonicity due to non-water drinking habit, availability of more metabolic water and also due to tissue water storage in this animal.
