Abstract:
To evaluate different trends of cigarette smoking in health care workers of Lyari General Hospital and Civil Hospital Karachi. Study Design: Descriptive study. PLACE OF STUDY: Lyari General Hospital / Civil Hospital Karachi, Dow University of Health Sciences. Material & Methods : This questionnaire based study was conducted in Lyari General Hospital / Civil Hospital Karachi, Dow University of Health Sciences in the Year 2007.470 health workers were voluntarily interviewed according to format of questionnaire and Proforma was properly filled in at the time of interview Exclusively all were males, aged between 18 to 60 years. Information about smoking in health care workers was analyzed accordingly. Results: 61.27 % started to smoke between age of 15 to 20 years. In developing smoking habit 68.08% influenced by friends, 28.93% by media, and 14.89% by family. 50.21% smoke moderately expensive brand, 20.42% low cost, and 24.25% expensive. 57.44% were aware about some side effects of smoking. 79.14% smoke at public places,54.04% smoke at work & 40.42 % when family is around.70.63% know about passive smoking hazards. 42.55% tried to quit smoking at least one. 96.59% will not advise smoking to their children. Conclusion: High figure in spite of knowing hazards of active and passive smoking, they still smoke at work and public places. Majority prefers moderately expensive brand with filter, smoke ten or less in a day, started in teens, having breathlessness and cough.
