Abstract:
For social and economic uplift of underdeveloped areas, communication network is a pre-requisite for which huge quantities of construction materials are required. Gravelly materials are available along the foothills of Suliman range. These deposits are generally unsorted and present as gravel terraces and fans in upper reaches of Suliman piedmont zone, which has developed by coalescing of terraces and fans during Pleistocene to Recent. Mauza Kalary of Tehsil Taunsa lies between longitude 70° 30’ to 70° 40’ E and latitude 30° 30’ to 30° 37’ N. It covers an area of 80 square kilometres and has a potential to meet the construction material requirements for highways, buildings and bridges. These deposits are composed of sub-rounded to rounded boulders, sub-angular to sub-rounded cobbles and gravels of limestone, sandstone, gypsum and gypsiferous shales mixed with very coarse to medium grained sandy matrix with clay coatings. The samples were tested for their shape, durability, strength and chemical and petrographic characteristics. Except the gravelly materials of Chit Bani Chur, all samples qualify the petrographic specification but toward durability and strength, the sample from Dhok Rohail qualifies for road base, asphalt and cement concrete if proper crushing procedures are adopted. Since materials from Chit Bani Chur and Rikhani Nullah are marginal toward their durability test, these may safely be used as sub-base material. The test results of sand from Nullah Mohi bed reveal that it is unsuitable for use in cement concrete.
