Abstract:

Eight species of the unicellular genera: Euglena, Phacus and Porphyridium were collected from various freshwater habitats in Rabwah and Sargodha cities of the Punjab Province (Pakistan) during March - October 1994. They were taxonomically investigated and found to belong to the phyla Euglenophyta and Porphyridiophyta Shameel. Euglena with five species was the most commonly occurring genus. Porphyridium purpureum is being reported for the first time from any area of Pakistan. It was found in edaphic condition, while other species occurred in free floating state.
