Abstract:
Anaemia is quite common in hospital in-patients of all ages. Its incidence seems to rise gradually with advancing age and it is equally prevalent in elderly men and women. In women of child-bearing age it is higher than in men of the same age. The factor of laboratory error for haemoglobin which is estimated at + 0.5g/100ml is worth remembering particularly in borderline cases. After these studies were completed York has started reporting haemoglobin in grams per litre, for example 112g/1 instead of 11.2g/d1. This seems to be more scientific and helpful. Finally, haemoglobin estimation and even pronouncing anaemia after certain tests is not a complete diagnosis in itself until the type and pathogenesis of the anaemia is properly investigated.
