Abstract:
Pakistan, within her boundaries, has suitable climatic, soil and altitudinal conditions for the cultivation of quite a number of highly valuable medicinal plants. The author suggests the following procedures to start systematic work in this field:'- Study of pharmacognosy should be started with the help of Systematic Botanists and Pharmacologists; and more proper training should be arranged for producing trained collectors of medicinal plants. Establishment of gardens of medicinal plants, where specimens of the various plants should be grown, not only to serve as living museum of medicinal plants but also as an established and permanent source of obtaining plant materials, seeds, cuttings, etc. for the cultivation of medicinal plants in the country. Agronomical experimental work should be undertaken by the appropriate authority to investigate and to find out the most economic method of cultivating medicinal plants having active principles for commercial exploitation. A herbarium of medicinal plants should be established and maintained. An appendix at the end lists 271 essential drug plants with their botanical, common (Bengali) names and parts of the plant used as medicine, whether wild or cultivated.
