Abstract:
Dipping local mango fruit in 1000 parts per million solution of maleic hydrazide and giberillic acid increased shelf life about a fortnight when placed in these carton at room temperature. The lower doses of these bioregulants are believed to work well. Simple application of 21/24 water soluble wax to mango fruit while placing in these cartons was found to be little desired for the continuation of inner deteriorating changes. Langram and "Dusehri" varieties of mango were observed to store well at ambient temperature for about 14+1 days and 30+2 days, respectively when placed in perforated cartons after dipping in 1000 PPM solution of maleic hydrazide or giberillic acid for 2 minutes and coating with 21/44 fruitex wax. American varieties were noticed to excell the grafted local ones in flavour and lower fibre content and stored well for about a month on treating with maleic hydrizide (1000 PPM) for 5 minutes even without waxing, at ordinary temperature in these cartons. These were found to behave like our local seedling mangoes and did not develop good flavour last year. This technique is quite simple in application and costs about Rs20/- per ton of mango fruits with maleic hydrizide and Rs120/- with giberillic acid which may still be lowered in case levels lesser than 1000 PPM worked well.
