Abstract:
Social media are virtual platforms that improve global communication, socialization and sharing of information among users. This study aimed to find out the type of social media usage, the average amount of time spent on popular social media apps and their impact on the mental and physical health of university students. A surveybased questionnaire was designed and the study encompassed 300 university students. The data were collected from students aged 18 to 24 years with a 100% response rate. The collected data were analyzed and presented in the form of graphs, tables and figures. According to the study and findings, students preferred to spend most of their time on social media for entertainment and communication. On average, every student had 2-5 social media accounts and they spent about 3-7 hours daily on social media. Half of the respondents claimed that they were addicted to social media. It was noticed that the excessive use of social media led to anxiety and depression among students. It was also observed that the balanced use of social media helped in improving the students' academic performance. Furthermore, many students were restricting their use of social media by taking breaks from one or more apps while a few of them also wanted to quit these platforms. In conclusion, completely restricting social media in this modern era is not possible as they have been incorporated into many aspects of our lives, however, they must be utilized in an appropriate, regulated and healthy way.
