Abstract:
Based on a sample survey of seven selected tehsils from district Dir, it is estimated that the current (year 2005) number of out migrants and emigrants from the project area would be 92,511 and 28,433, respectively. Their estimated remittances total at Rs. 7.855 billion (for the year 2005) and account for 94% of the recipient household income from all sources. While the outflow of workers has reduced pressure on the local job market, the workers remittance has brought about visible improvements in the household sector, agriculture, trade, and other segments of the economy. The project area`s relative disadvantages in resource endowment or/and level of development are thus off-set a good deal by workers migration and the associated flow of remittances. The government would, therefore, do well if it adopted conscious measures to increase the migration flow, encourage greater return flow of remittances and channalise these into productive enterprises. Thus, the main hypothesis of this study is confirmed by this study.
