Abstract:
The effluent samples from Sohan River and seven different industries, situated at Rawalpindi and Islamabad, were analyzed for their physico-chemical, microbiological and some of metal contents. The results indicated that the total dissolved solid (TDS, chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved oxygen (DO), nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, sodium and potassium contents were above the permissible limits whereas River Sohan showed considerable pollution throughout the year because all industrial units at Rawalpindi and Islamabad discharge effluent into it, without prior treatment. These pollutants may have an adverse effect on the ecological state of Sohan River and in turn on the aquatic life. Furthermore, the terrestrial life which uses the river water may also be affected.
