Abstract:
There are various techniques in use for direct measurement of very short time intervals and time correlations. Scintillation counters have outstanding position among the currently available techniques. In recent times, the emergence of efficient detectors like semi-conductor detectors could not supersede the scintillation counters which are still by far the best for the direct shortest time measurement. Accuracy of the time measurement with a scintillation counter depends mainly on the statistical features or the available output signals. The statistical features of the signals can be assessed from the study of the time resolution obtain ed. Theoretical analyses and experimental studies have been carried out to investigate the timing properties of the scintillation counters and the associated electronics. The most significant factors in this respect are (1) photocathode illumination function (ii) statistical behaviour of photomultipliers and (111) response of the time analysers.
