Abstract:
Hand Grip strength is a measure of maximum force generated by one`s forearm muscles. It can be used as a screening tool for the measurement of upper body strength and overall strength. Weak hand grip strength is considered to be a predictor of early mortality. It has been reported that majority of Karachi do not have a strong hand grip strength. A longitudinal study on gym going male subjects in the age range of 19-39 was conducted. A total of 60 participants were included in this pilot study. After measuring hand grip strength of all, the subjects were divided into 4 groups, 20 each, to evaluate the effectiveness of three additional hand grip based exercises per day for 21 days on improving hand grip strength. First group continued without any new exercise and was used as control, second group added 5 minutes dead hangs, third group added 5 minutes of hand strengthener device, and fourth group used 5 minutes of fingers strengtheners’ device. After 3 weeks hand grip strength was measured again. Descriptive statistics were applied, for continuous variables hence, one-way ANOVA was performed to show the relationship between grip strength score in all 4 groups. Our study reports that adding hand grip based exercise in daily routine can improve hand grip strength and thereby reduce the associated risk of early mortality.
