Traditional and medicinal uses of some spice plants of Neelum Valley District Muzaffarabad, Azad Jammu & Kashmir.

Abstract:
The knowledge on the uses of plants as medicines dates back 4500-1600 BC in the form of scattered hyamns in Rigveda which is suppo to be the first known literature on the Earth. The spices also possess gr medicinal potential, e.g. Coriandrum sativum, Allium sativum, Puni granatum and Brassica juncea._Poineering research during the last thr decades have documented many beneficial physiological effects of spic which suggest that the use of spices extend beyond taste and flavour. Spic are used not only individually, but also in the form of mixture known as "Cur Powders" to suit different tastes and dishes. The climax vegetation is "moi temperate type". Neelum Valley is lying towards the North Eastern side of District Muzaffarabad. The Jungles of Neelum Valley produce a quantity of medicinal plants which are being used by the natives including the tribals as their medicament. Some areas of this Valley have been surveyed from 1999 by the author in search of medicinal plants. 16 Plants spices belonging 12 families are dealt with in this paper.
