Abstract:
A study was carried out at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ishurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh during 2006-2007 to find out suitable variety and optimum planting time of banana. Two varieties cv. Sabri and BARI Kala-1 and six planting times (15th of each September, October, November, February, March and April) were used. Maximum pseudostem height of banana plant (306.03cm) was recorded in Sabri. Plants of BARI Kala-1 were shorter in height (165.80cm). Minimum crop, duration was recorded in variety Sabri (412.0 days). Among planting times, February planting had minimum duration (374.60 days) against maximum in September planting (445.3 days). Significantly higher bunch weight (20.46 ch) was obtained from BARI Kala-1. Among planting times, significantly higher bunch weight (20.94 kg/bunch) alongwith bigger fruit (248.82 g) was produced by October planting. In case of variety and planting time interaction BARI Kala-1 in October planting produced higher bunch weight (25.02 kg), number of fingers per bunch (205.13g) and fruit weight (308.66g). It was concluded that October planting is the most appropriate for BARI Kala-1 banana in Ishurdi region of Bangladesh.
