Abstract:
Water was estimated from various excitable and non-excitable tissues of Uromastix. The water content of various skeletal muscles ranged from 78% to 79% of the total muscle weight while their protein residues had 4% less water. The visceral organs were found to contain about 4 to 5% more water than the skeletal muscles and there was no difference between excitable and non-excitable tissues on this basis. The water content of ovary was found to be the same as that of skeletal muscles, while liver was found to have an exceptionally low water content. It is suggested that Uromastix, being a desert adapted reptile, stores water in its visceral organs.
