Abstract:
Gelatin based Hydrogel under acidic and basic condition (gelHA and gelHB) were synthesized from gelatin powder by a chemical crosslinking method using epicholorohydrin (ECH) as a cross-linker. The prepared gelatin hydrogel under acidic and basic condition were tested for their swelling behavior, the pH of the point of zero charge, Fourier Transform-Infrared (FT-IR) for functional groups detection, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) for pore size determination had been determined. The ability of Gelatin hydrogel under acidic and basic condition for removing the Methylene blue (MB) cationic and Alizarin Red S anionic dyes from its aqueous solution was evaluated. The different parameters affecting the removal of the dye, such as pH, initial concentration of dye, amount of Acidic gelatin hydrogel and basic gelatin hydrogel (adsorbent dosage), contact time, volume and temperature, were investigated. The optimum conditions for 69.4% and 64% removal of Methylene blue dye efficiency were pH= 6 and pH=9 initial concentration of dye= 8 ppm and 8ppm, contact time = 24 hours and 6 hours, gelHA and gelHB dosage = 0.1g and 0.1g,volum of initial dye =10 ml at 25°C respectively. The optimum conditions for 81% and 94% removal of Alizarin Red S dye efficiency were pH= 4 and pH=4 initial concentration of dye= 30 ppm and 10ppm, contact time = 24 hours for both, gel HA and gel HB dosage = 0.1g and 0.1g, volume of initial dye =10 ml at 25°C respectively. The adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamic parameters have been studied. The results showed an appropriate fit for Langmuir adsorption isotherm and pseudo second order kinetics model with an adsorption capacity of Methylene blue for Acidic gelatin hydrogel and basic gelatin hydrogel is 55.6mg/g and 51.4mg/g respectively. Adsorption capacity of Alizarin Red S for Acidic gelatin hydrogel and basic gelatin hydrogel is 51.9mg/g and 35.6mg/g respectively. According to the obtained values of thermodynamic parameters, the removal of Methylene blue and Alizarin Red S dyes by gel HA and gel HB hydrogels was exothermic spontaneous process.
