Abstract:
A numerical study of hypersonic rarefied flow past a sphere at Mach number 12.92 has been carried out using Navier Stokes equations based calculations under test conditions representing near-continuum flow regime. Validity of continuum flow model for Knudsen number, Kn of 0.009 has been investigated by comparing results of present numerical study with low density wind tunnel[1] test results and with DSMC[2] calculations. Moreover, present numerical study reveals that flow recirculation or steady vortex does not exist in the near wake for near-continuum flow regime of Kn = 0.009. This agrees to DSMC[2] predictions and provides a reasonable correction to previous prediction of presence of a steady vortex made by Navier Stokes calculations[3] under similar test conditions.
