Abstract:
Xylose is present in agricultural residues rich in carbohydrates namely cellulose and hemicellulose contained in agricultural wastes (corn cobs, wheat straw, rice straw, sugar-cane baggase). The hemicellulosic fraction can be processed for the production of xylitol for applications in the food and beverage industries as well as a good sweetener for diabetic patients. In the present investigation, xylose (50,100,140, and 170 g/L) was used as a carbon source to observe the fermentation behaviour of Candida tropicalis. It was observed that in 96 h, all xylose content was utilized. In case of 140 and 170 g/I xylose, a maximum of 85 and 120 g/I xylitol was produced respectively. The potential kinetic parameters following growth on above sugar concentrations have been presented.
