Abstract:
Barium-140-lanthanum-140 was used as tracer for studying silt movement. Barium-140 decays into lanthanum-140 and the penetrating gamma radiations from lanthanum-140 can easily be detected under water with a scintillation or large Geiger counter. Health hazards and the sensitivity of detection are the factors which govern the specific activity of the labelled sand used as tracer. The specific activity; health hazards and the detection limit are described briefly.
