Abstract:
Exotic species of Atriplex viz: A. canescence, A. halimus A. lentiformis, A. polycarpa and A. vesicaria were introduced in saline non-irrigated soils of Lower Sind Pakistan. The establishment of Atriplex species greatly depended on soil moisture and salt content. 10 to 12 percent readily available moisture in the upper 0-15 cm layer of soil appeared to be the minimum requirement. Soils with high Na concentration (above 400 m'- equiv/1) did not favour the establishment of plants. The success was partly related to decreasing Na concentration and lower Na/K ratios. A. halimus appeared to establish preferably in calcareous soil and A. vesicaria in non-calcareous soil while other species were equally adaptable to both conditions of soil. Possibilities of establishing Atriplex species are discussed.
