Abstract:
AIMS: To evaluate the efficacy of a single intravitreal Bevacizumab injection before cataract surgery METHODS: Randomised, controlled, open-label, parallel group study of 90 eyes of 90, having diabetic macular edema and lens opacity (of more than grade 3). Change in BCVA at 6 weeks compared with that at baseline. Central macular thickness was compared in both groups pre and post operatively. RESULTS: In Bevacizumab group, 86.7% had BCVA of 6/18 or better and decrease in macular thickness(mean 97 microns), while in control group, only 46.7% had BCVA of 6/18 or better and increased macular thicknes (mean 30 microns) was observed. CONCLUSIONS: Intravitreal Bevacizumab before cataract surgery appears to be beneficial in preventing post- surgical visual loss in eyes with diabetic retinopathy by reducing the chance of macular thickening.
