Abstract:
Solid State Nuclear Trace Detectors (SSNTDs) have opened a new vista in nuclear physics research, particularly in the area of heavy ion physics. Their unique features such as a) the insensitivity to low ionizing particles and gamma rays, b) availability with widely different track registering thresholds, c) high geometrical flexibility, d) small size, c) integrating nature, f) “off-line” data collection and g) possibility of exclusive measurements, make them extremely useful in the studies of nuclear reactions. These detectors have played crucial role in experiments involving the emission of heavy charged particles in the presence of high background of beta particles, gamma rays and neutrons. This paper gives a very brief and selective review of the following important applications in nuclear physics research:
