Abstract:
Retained foreign body in an orbit, like a piece of wood from a pencil, usually causes mild but chronic granulomatous reaction leading to orbital absecess, osteomylitis of the orbital bones or formation of fistula. History of lodgement of foreign body is usually misleading. Initial symptoms of swelling and oedema maysubsideproptosis. After the initial reaction subsides the foreign body remains indefinitely in the orbit without causing any distress. Ocular symptoms may not be present if the important structure in the orbit are undamaged. The patient seeks consultation either for slight deformity due to chronic granuloma specially if present along orbital margin or for proptosis. Provided there is no evidence of involvement of anterior cranial fosse, anterior approach in orbitotomy is a good access.
