Abstract:
The chemical investigations of the seeds of Ricinus communis Linn has afforded ricinine and a number of carbohydrates, free amino acids and protein amino acids. Among these compounds one carbohydrate (maltose), five free, amino acids (glycine, leucine, tryptophan, valine and phenylalanine) and four protein amino acids (leucine, glycine, proline and hydroproline) are being reported for the first time. Besides, the alkaloid recinine, previously known to occur in free form only, has also been found to be present in the form of its salt. The structures were established by chromatographic and spectroscopic methods.
