Abstract:
TEM methods of investigation in mineralogy are extended from calcite and dolomite carbonates to another mineral smithsonite. The microstructures observed in smithsonite are morphologically similar to those in calcite and dolomite. The "modulated microstructure" observed is mostly impurity related and sometimes coherent ribbon-like structures, which are thought to be the manifestations of modulation, are also observed. The damage of specimen under the electron beam, specifically at the interfaces of the growth-bands shows the impurity relation to the instability of the crystal phase. The results show that by the use of TEM coupled with micro-analysis (EDX), one can estimate and ultimately confirm the solid solubility limit of various impurities in a particular crystalline phase.
