Vaginal birth after Cesarean section.

Abstract:
VBAC is a favourably option in properly selected patients with previous one cesarean section. It is a way of reducing the incidence of cesarean deliveries as well as its associated morbidity and mortality. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of vaginal birth with previous one cesarean section. To evaluate the maternal and fetal outcome-associated with vaginal birth and emergency cesarean section. SETUP: Descriptive observational study conducted in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Nawabshah Medical College Hospital Nawabshah from 1st January 2004 to 31st December 2004. Material & Methods: The study group was evaluated regarding their age, parity, booking status, indication of previous c/section, partographic record and postnatal care. All the information was extracted from the ward record using the protocol prepared for the purpose of this study. Results: 186 patients were given a trial of scar in whom 78 (41.93 %) achieved vaginal birth. Vaginal delivery was commonly observed in patients who have previous normal deliveries. 108 patients underwent emergency c/section, majority were priori parae (58.33 %), scar dehiscence was observed in one (0.92 %) patient. Regarding neonatal complication, one (0.92 %) stillbirth and one (0.92 %) neonatal death occurred. Conclusion: VBAC is a safe option in selected patients with previous one c/section in appropriate clinical setting.
