Abstract:
The adsorption of thorium ions on molecular sieve (13X type) powder from aqueous solutions was investigated in the temperature range of 10- -40°C. The adsorption equilibrium data was applied to the Freundlich and the Langmuir isotherm equations. The Langmuir equation provides better fit in the concentration range studied. The thermodynamic quantities (namely ?H, ?S and ?G) were computed from the Kads values of Langmuir isotherm equation. Both positive values of AH and decrease in the value of ?G with increasing temperature show that the high temperature favours the adsorption of thorium ions on molecular sieve. The values of isosteric heat of adsorption, qst for thorium ions were calculated using the Clausius-Clapeyron equation at various coverages and are interpreted.
