Pyrolysis of municipal solid waste of Islamabad to derive value added products and energy recover: A step towards circular economy in Pakistan

Abstract:
In Pakistan, Municipal solid waste (MSW) management is become serious environmental challenge particularly rapidly increasing urban areas such as Islamabad. Conventional approaches including landfilling, open dumping and burning are inefficient methods and can’t recover resources and energy embedded in waste. Pyrolysis is promising WTE techniques that efficiently convert MSW into useful products. In this study, co-pyrolysis of various MSW blends were investigated to improve the products yield and quality via synergistic effects. The experiments were conducted in pilot scale fixed-bed reactor at 450 ºC with heating rate of 5 ºC/s and resident time of 1 hour. The results revealed that the plastic dominant MSW blend had highest yield of bio oil(42.5%) and syngas (38%) while the textile rich blend had highest yield of bio char (53.5%). The plastic-rich composition had highest yield of CH4 (24.2%)and H2 (17.9%). FTIR spectrum revealed that the bio char produced from different municipal solid waste fractions retains a carbonaceous structure rich in both aliphatic and aromatic functionalities. Overall, this study highlights the potential of pyrolysis of MSW for efficient energy recovery, waste management and promoting the circular economy.
