Abstract:
Toxicity (LD50) of four compounds i.e. Shikonin, Shikonin propionate, Shikonin-2-ethyl butyrate and phikonin-thiophene-2-carboxylate was determined as 16.00 mg/kg, 9.75 mgm/kg, 8.5 mgm/kg and 6.0 mgm/kg respectively. Electrophoretic pattern shows 7 protein bands in normal blood serum but they were inhibited by those compounds having CH groups. Band 1 and 2 were inhibited in all the gels, while band 7 was inhibited by the analogs having 0-C"-group but not by shikonin which do not contain this group. Protein bands 3-6 were also disturbed indicating poisoning effect.
