Abstract:
The objective was to study the value of serum CA125 levels in the initial workup of women with ovarian cancers. Over a two year period (1st January 1999 31st December 2000). Preoperative serum CA125 level was analysed in 23 women with clinical suspicion and those with an adnexal mass diagnosed as ovarian malignancy postoperatively on histopathology at Lady Dufferin Hospital, Karachi. Among patients with an age range 13072 years (mean: 44 years.) 82% had epithelial ovarian cancer, CA 125 was raised in 80% of stage I. 78% of stage III and 100% stage IV disease. We therefore recommend preoperative serum CA 125 estimate in all cases of suspicious adnexal masses.
