Abstract:
Twelve type specimens of metacercariae for the family Diplostomatidae are described and evaluated from the collection of the lake A.A Shigin (USSR). Each specimen represents a different species all of which were found in infected fish from Russia. Each species is represented by two figures and a brief description. Key features include size, nature of suckers both anterior and posterior, shape and the development of the organ systems. These type specimens have been deposited in the Manter Museum at the University of Nebraska (Lincoln, Nebraska, USA). Metacercariae are of major importance for fish health as exemplified by Diplostomum spathaceum which causes blindness in the host fish. Other problems are exemplified such as Diplostomum mordax in the brain of fish from Lake Titicaca, Bolivia. Recent articles and other examples for pathology are included.
