Abstract:
Owing to the potential impact on human health, assessing heavy metal pollution in urban soil is critical. We conducted a thorough investigation of heavy metal contamination in Vehari urban soil and wastewater in this study. The objective of this study was to determine the levels of heavy metal contamination, including cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), arsenic (As), and chromium (Cr) in Vehari urban soil, wastewater, and plant samples collected from various locations. To achieve this goal, soil, wastewater, and plant samples were collected from various locations in Vehari urban areas. Heavy metal concentrations in these samples were determined using analytical techniques such as atomic absorption spectroscopy. Results revealed that pH, EC, and TDS were higher in wastewater samples collected from 75WB. Heavy metal concentrations varied from location to location in wastewater; however, maximum concentrations of Cd were found at 39WB, Cr at 39WB, and as at 75WB. The findings revealed that heavy metal contamination levels in Vehari urban soil varied. The soil samples contained Cd,Pb, As, and Cr with mean concentrations of 0.0020, 0.0032, 0.2239, and 0.0452mg/kg, respectively. Pb and as had the highest concentrations, indicating potential sources of pollution in the urban environment. The contamination factor and pollution loading index based on the determined samples were less than 1; however, the ecological index was higher, indicating a potential threat of heavy metal pollution in this region. Plant metal concentrations were under permissible limits; however, translocation and bioaccumulation factors were greater than 1, indicating a risk of food chain contamination. Overall, this study adds to our understanding of heavy metal pollution in Vehari urban soil and the potential health risks associated with it.
