Cockroaches have subcuticular nerve plexus like locusts, while the blow fly maggots and wax-moth larvae have subepidermal nerve plexuses. In case of subepidermal nerve plexus, every dendrite of a multipolar neuron ends at the level of epidermal cells; while in case of subcuticular nerve plexus, every dendrite penetrates endocuticle. The number of dendtrites are 2 to 3 with each multipolar neuron. The number of multipolar dendritic endings is variable in various parts of the body of an insect.
