Tricyclic antidepressants are prescribed less commonly due to side effects and their regular monitoring requirement. The newer drugs have same efficacy, however relatively high therapeutic index and better safety profile. We have tried Clomipramine in number of indications and have found them to be effective. The regular monitoring for side effects was mandatory and in our experience it enhanced the compliance to the treatment. The side effects are manageable. The tricyclics are cheaper drugs, affordable and response to treatment is comparable to other antidepressants available in market.
