Abstract:
Agriculture is the only source of food and major contributor in Pakistan's economy. In Pakistan, 75 % people are directly and indirectly involved with agriculture. It also provides feed to the animals. Feed component directly effects milk and meat production. Forage yield can be enhanced by the adoption of modern production technology. Because of its habit to mature early, sorghum gained much importance in irrigated lands. Therefore, it is needed to execute a research to study the impact of sowing dates and seed priming techniques on qualitative traits of forage sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) under different climatic conditions. The experiment was comprised of randomized complete block design with split plot arrangement having three replications. Three different sowing dates (25th May, 15th June, 5thJuly) and seeds was soaked for 10 hours under priming treatment of control, hydro priming, priming with Zn 1% and Fe 1% Solution. All other agronomic parameters were kept uniform. Results indicated that maximum of leaves (12.66), leaf area (2824.00 cm2) per plant, plant height (229.33 cm), plant density (29 cm), stem diameter (1.30 cm), fresh forage yield (64.50 t ha-1), higher dry matter production (17.53 t ha-1) with high percentage of crude protein (11.23 %) was significantly observed against SD1 (25th May) SP3 (Zn 1%) treatment in the experiment. Whilst the higher fiber contents (26.50%) were observed for un-primed seeds against the treatment of SD3SP2 (5th July along hydro-priming) whilst, the maximum ash contents (8.60 %) were recorded when crop was subjected to hydro-priming and sown on 1st sowing date during the experiment. Seed priming enhance fodder quality of sorghum crop.
