Abstract

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has been emerging worldwide as one of the most important hospital and community pathogens. Therefore, new agents are needed to treat MRSA associated infections. Plant extracts have been used as an active antimicrobial compound since long. The present study was intended to validate the effect of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.), black pepper (Piper nigrum L.) and their combination on antibacterial activity and angiogenesis. The MIC of combination of turmeric and black pepper was calculated by broth micro-dilution method which was 0.062g/ml, indicating the synergism of both herbs when used together. MTT assay was performed to evaluate cytotoxicity and cell survival percentage was observed at synergistic doses which indicated that synergistic dose was nontoxic. Effect on angiogenesis was observed by CAM assay which revealed that when turmeric and black pepper were used in combination inhibition of neovascularization was more promising as compared to when turmeric was used alone which further testified the synergistic effect of black pepper on not only the antibacterial activity of turmeric but also on its antiangiogenic activity.
