Abstract:
Field studies were initiated at Malakandher Research Farm, NWFP Agricultural University, Peshawar during Rabi 2004-05 to investigate the efficacy of different herbicides alone or in mixtures for control of weeds in wheat crop. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with four replications. The experiment comprised of seven herbicides and a weedy check treatments. The herbicidal treatments were post emergence applications of Isoproturon @ 4.5 kgha-1. Affinity @ 4.9 kg ha-1, Sencor @ 2.45 kg ha-1, Puma super + 2,4D @ 1.875 + 2.0 kg ha-1, Puma super + Buctril-M@ 1.875 + 1.6 kg ha-1, Topik + 2,4-D @ 0.168 + 2.0 kg ha-1, Topik + Buctril –M@ 0.168 + 1.6 kg ha-1 and Weedy check plots. Ghaznavi-98 variety of wheat in plot size of 5 x 2 m2 was planted in third week of November 2004. The data were recorded on the following parameters weed density m-2, fresh weed biomass m2, plant height (cm), number of grain spike-1, tiller plants-1, 1000 grain wedight (g), Biological yield (kg ha-1) and Grain yield (kg ha-1). For controlling weeds (Puma super + Buctril – M) proved to be the best, giving only (2.00) weeds m-2 as compared to (20, 80) in weedy check plots. The major weeds infesting the experiment were Avena fatua, Phakaris minor, Convolvulus arvensis, Poa annua and Ammi visnaga. Maximum grain yield was recorded in Puma super + Buctril-M (3194 kg ha-1) followed by Topik + Buctril-M (3074 kg ha-1) treated plots. While, the minimum grain yield (614 kg ha-1) was recorded in control plots. The herbicide mixtures of Buctril-M with either Topik or Buctril M are recommended for the control of weeds in wheat.
