Abstract:
The length of hilsa which migrate to the rivers from the Bay of Bengal for breeding ranges from 24 to 54 cm in length. Hilsa of size between 33 to 45 cm and weighing between 0.7 to 2.75 lb are found in much abundance in the rivers. Abundance of hilsa of a particular length group or weight group varies from year to year. The weight of hilsa varies season and area-wise. It is maximum in the summer season. In the same season the weight of hilsa caught in the lower reaches of the river is greater than the weight of hilsa caught in the upper reaches. There is no significant year to year variation in the weight of hilsa. No significant gradual decrease in the weight of hilsa from year to year is anticipated.
